Last April, Emily Shanahan took his dog, Mortimer, to the vet because he started having some stomachaches. The vet, Dr. Dough of MSPCA Angell, diagnosed him with unrelated vomiting syndrome, so they gave him medicine to get better.
After the vet prescribed him with some medication, they were able to take Mortimer home. The family thought that the three-year-old bulldog’s stomach misery would end there. It did help him, but only for a short period.
Mid-May came, and Mortimer became so sick they can’t believe it was the same dog. He spends his time sleeping, and he stopped following his mom anywhere, which is unusual. But then, early June came, and Mortimer stopped eating, his mom sensed that it implied that there’s seriously something wrong with their dog.
Emily rushed him to MSPCA Angell’s Animal Medical Center, and they did X-rays on him. When the results of the X-rays came out, it showed 19 pacifiers in his stomach.
The findings shocked Emily because even though they have two small children at home, she never imagined Mortimer eating their pacifiers. As it turns out, Mortimer steals one pacifier at a time over several months. He was so sneaky that no one in the family noticed him.
Thankfully, the veterinary team was able to do the endoscopy safely and as they successfully removed the 19 pacifiers from Mortimer’s digestive tract. The vet remarked that the family did the right thing by rushing the dog right away to the vet because it saved Mortimer from further pain.
Mortimer is now at home, recovering nicely. He is back to his old self, which made the family happy and relieved. The family loves him as it was apparent that they’d do anything for him.
We must become more aware and alert in taking care of our dogs. We must secure every item that might harm them in any way and always think ahead. After all, we are all responsible for their safety.
